Tonifying Lung yet bruise on LU-9?

Nkosi1: May 1, 2019, 5:35pm
Hello,
My name is Nkosi and I’m brand new to this form but not necessarily Sa’am. Toby and Michael asked if can share
this case and maybe it will be benefit all of us learning the system. SO…
I been treating a regular patient (57 years old female) and while talking with her about a month ago. I asked if they
was any negative emotions she had been perceiving or feeling the most (seven emotions). She stated told me fear
but mainly related to finances and I began to start tonifying LU due to Stomach excess. Patient usually comes in
for back pain Mid-low always worsened with cold weather, additionally she has history of frontal headaches and
tension in the area, chronic constipation, since seeing me its been much better but somewhat plateaued, dry skin
(fatty liver, gallbladder has been removed). Another thing the patient recently revealed is that she has been on
allergy medication since she was young. When she was younger up to her teenage years, she would always been
horribly seasonal allergies. Tongue is usually scalloped in different areas, cracked, scanty coat, teethmarks on
edges, Pulse is also normally deep and slow. I had been tonify LI (bad idea) due to this patient being overweight
(many years of her life) and the craving for sweets. It would usually help but the relief wears off after 4-5 days,
transitory effect. During the last three treatments the back an overall health of the patient is vastly improved and no
headache like symptoms according to her, however she has gotten a bruise on LU-9 during the last two treatments.
I did tonify the left side the last two times, maybe that is the problem or maybe otherwise. What do you think?
Sharing.
Nkosi

Thanks for posting the case. Interesting that even though she is overweight with dry skin, her back and overall
health have benefited from Lung+. It sounds like talking about her relationship to money helped you decide to treat
Lung. It always blows my mind that considering relation to finances can make such a big impact with treatment.
It sounds like your question is about the bruise on Lung9. These seems like a needle technique matter. Maybe she
has some anatomical variation that needs considering if you needle that point again.

When I first started with Sa’am and Toby told me about the $$$–Lung relationship I thought “yeah, right…
maybe.”
I would say that while it is not always the case (what is in this medicine) an abundance of “resources” do often
show up for the Lung Excess types. Likewise lack of resources often go with the Stomach Excess types.
@KristinWisgirda, I’m still a bit unclear on how the lung lifts. I know Toby has talked about it. But I still have
this idea that the Lung qi mostly goes down and disperses.

My clinical experience so far has shown me how the lung is able to hold onto things including resources and
phlegm. Maybe the ability to hold stuff is part of the lifting action. So far clinically, I have seen Lung+ treatments
lift hemorrhoids and help incontinence. I am curious about the lifting of the Lung in comparison to the upthrusting
of the GB and consolidation of the Kidney.
More instances in the clinic have shown me the downbearing and receiving but not holding actions of the Stomach.

Good point here @KristinWisgirda. The lung does have the capacity to “store” resources. Which is completely
counter to the TCM idea of it constantly dispersing. This really is another look at the consolidation of metal.

There is that cross clock LU <–> UB connection and thus supporting the Lung can influence the UB. I’d not
thought about its ability to lift hemmoriods. Seems we are talking a kind of Huang Qi function here. Which when
you think Lung and Wei Qi also makes sense.

Kidney.
Great question! Let’s keep looking into these connections. Thanks for pointing it out.
My first thought that is that Lung does not out thrust, but more gently lifts. Or can be seen like the finger on a
straw in a glass of water. Cap the straw and you can lift water out in the straw. It does not raise water, but “holds” it
in a way. I see the GB as an explosion outward. Lung is a kind of holding within another system of support.
Kidney consolidation… Again, a kind of holding, rather than outward movement.

Great discussion on expanding the concept of Metal Lung and it’s interaction in the body. When it concerns the
Lung ability to lift, taiyin nature may provide some light. The Taiyin is the first level of the yin level and begins the
yin level movement. It naturally lifts to start the cascade of normal/balance physiology in the yin levels, but maybe
not in a way most would think of lifting. The Lung instead of Spleen, takes on a more lifting function due to Spleen
(Earth) having a more yin nature compared to Lung (Metal) (relativity). Toby may be bring this idea of Lung for us
to a more full circle understanding. Going back to this patient though, something seems to be missing. Tonify the
Lung with the full spectrum of symptoms and complications seems incomplete. In this system we must always
takes presenting problem layer by layer but my mind is just wondering pertaining to this case Thoughts?

@Nkosi1 What is this patient’s chief complaints or major issues these days now that
Nkosi1:
the back an overall health of the patient is vastly improved
What seems incomplete to you?
