Hello,
I’m interested to hear other’s experiences and thoughts regarding seasonal considerations in Sa’am treatment. Is it
usual to find oneself tonifying UB more frequently in the summer, and HT more in the winter, for instance? How
much clinical weight does the current seasonal qi have?
My question is partly spurred by reading Sichuan herbalist Dr Yu Guo-Jun’s suggestion (rooted in the Su Wen) to
tonify yang in the summer and tonify yin in the winter. The rationale as I understand it is that yang qi is exhausted
in the summer through sweating and becomes deficient internally, while yin is consumed in the winter as our
metabolic furnaces burn hot.
Sa’am is its own system, of course, but I can’t help but wonder what patterns people have observed…I myself have
yet to tonify Heart here during NC summer (high of 96 today).

Hi Jonathan,
Thanks for your inquiry.

Yes, season and weather have clinical weight. SJ+ is more common in winter and Liv+ can needed more in
summer. LI+ with high humidity. We don’t really have dry weather where I am, but Sp+ would likely be more used
in dryness.
Tiny has even talked about waiting for environmental changes to use a channel, for instance waiting until cold
weather to use H+ in a patient who needs the love of others Toni first but might not tolerate the hot aspect in other
seasons.
I too was intrigued by the chapter in Dr Yu’s book that you cite. The Su Wen is definitely a source to listen to as
well. The case studies Dr Yu presents are chronic recalcitrant situations, so it might be a strategy to keep in mind.
With Sa’am I am treating what I see and so do use H+ in summer- not only with air conditioner syndrome. Maybe
being further north than you are, I see more patients with deeper cold conditions.

Does Toby know you are now calling him ‘Tiny’?

Don’t tell the boss!
Autocorrect usually goes for Tony. Tiny is a new one.
That is what I get for responding via my phone rather than a larger screen.

Yes, this is a classic perspective on looking at the longer cycles of seasons and influences. Like using that blistering
moxa at the height of summer to protect against winter cold.
I have not thought of using Saam in that way. It seems to me Saam is more for what is expressing in the moment,
than in reaching across the cycles of time and seasons. But I could be wrong, it’s just that I’ve not considered it that
way.
