Loud, Booming Voice

What would you think are the possible Sa’Am interpretations of a distinctly Loud and Booming Voice? I have had
a few patients recently – and the number one thing in the room, the ‘grossest’ thing in the room was their LOUD
voice! I am thinking of Gall Bladder (thrusting up and out), Heart (Hyper functioning), SanJiao (asserting control
over external Things). Thoughts?

Amazing timing on this topic Daniel. I recently have wondered about the same thing. I was talking to another acu
the other day about how he was treating a mutual friend and wondered how I would approach it. He had pain
behind his R eye, his voice absolutely booming. When everyone is quietly discussing something he will come in
with a thunderous roar as a response.
To me ‘thunderous’ is important, the trigram for GB in Saam is Zhen/Thunder. The only thing is in many was he is
a lot more librarian in terms of anger expression. In his own words and of those who know him a long time, they
dont often see him angry. Unfortunately I didnt get to do a proper assessment let alone treatment but it did get me
wondering about booming voices as GB even if there is no outward aggression. Everything else fit, man I wish I
could’ve stuck him with some PC tonification.

My notes have the following excesses creating a loud or shouting voice: GB, H and Lung.
I have a very, very, very Lung excess patient with some Heart and GB excess tendencies who has such a loud
voice.
Daniel:
SanJiao (asserting control over external Things).
The politeness of SJ excess wouldn’t like to be loud.
My notes talk about quiet or reserved voice being an expression of Jueyin. Nothing about UB or St excess being
quiet per se but it makes sense that a Stomach excess might not have enough qi to project and a UB excess will be
too frozen.

Any thoughts on how the quality / characteristics of the Loudness of GB, HT and LU may differ?

My guesses are just what you would expect- aggressive would point to GB excess, fast talking and loquacious
would be Heart excess. Can’t think of a quality of voice beyond loud that points to Lung excess. Of course you
would be looking for other aspects of the presentation to corroborate.

I too associate the loud booming voice (in school we learned this as the “shouting” of the Liver) with the GB. And
even people that don’t have a loud and booming quality, but a kind of insistence that has me wanting to move my
chair a few feet back from them… those too I see having an element of GB excess if I’m trespassed on.
I would think the HT excess would be more of having a friendly buddy-buddy like feeling. People who are a bit
boisterous. They are probably more “happy” than aggressive.
Maybe a LU excess would be like Morgan Freeman. Simple full of qi and, power and connection.

How about opera singers for models of Lung excess? Their singing requires an over the top amount of qi and they
often have big chests and bellies to round out the picture. I wonder if they have a tendency to dry skin

great image @KristinWisgirda, and most opera singers are corpulent. yeah, I’d want to check for that dry skin as
well!23/01/2024, 11:50Loud, Booming Voice – Sa’am Clinical Questions – Qiological Community

Bingo!! That’s awesome Kristin. Opera Singer. My LOUD patient was just here. Her main complaint is knee
stiffness/knee tightness. She is very barrel chested and her voice is LOUD, so LOUD . . . but I was just not getting
GB or HT at all . . . but yes, she is an opera singer for sure – she has the kind of vocal projection. So I put the
needles in for Stomach Supplementation and she quieted down almost instantly. Got off the table and said her
knees felt looser. WE will see – next booked session is next week. But I think we may want to put ‘Opera Singer’
right up there with archetypes like ‘Banker’ and ‘Mike Tyson’!

I like opera singer as a model Lung excess. Even if they don’t have $ resources their abundant qi shows up in their
voices. The stereotypical morphology is spot on.
Though T says Heart excess is a possibility for loud patients, I haven’t seen any yet. Lung and GB are more
common loud people in my practice.
