How Much Do You Think it Matters . .

. . . . . if we needle one point in a treatment in the wrong direction??
yesterday, I put a treatment in . . . on returning 20 minutes later, I realised one of the four needles, I had
accidentally inserted in the wrong direction (tonified instead of dispersed)!!

Of course, that NEVER happened to me! wink wink.
Actually, I have done the whole opposite channel than I should of! That was early on when I was still confused
about the difference between when to tonify Lung vs tonify St…Another time I was supplementing St but tonified
St 36 as if I was doing LI tonifcation… Both times the patient was actually somewhat better. Lucky. But this
probably NEVER happens to anyone else, only you and I.
What happened?

not my first time!!
but yesterday was a particularly frenetic day in clinic
I only realised it at the end of the session
they certainly seemed fine
had no real sense if it made any difference
these are the kinds of clinical ‘events’ that have probably led to innovations in the centuries and millenia gone by!!
(Teflon was invented tha way – a total mistake)

@Daniel and Sharon, thanks for this post, I have been wondering the same thing. Sounds like at least 3 of us have
made these mistakes 12/01/2024, 12:14How Much Do You Think it Matters . . – Qiological Community

I did a LU+ last week. didn’t realize until after the patient left that I incorrectly sedated SP2 instead of tonifying
SP3.
The patient felt FANTASTIC while on the table. He emailed me today, saying this is the best he’s felt in years.
so… I guess it worked out ok?
On the same day, I was doing another LU+ and after inserting all needles, at the 5min check-in, was when I noticed
I’d f-ed up the LU+ pattern that day. (she also got SP2-) She had seemed to be doing pretty well, good coloring,
calm, but I removed her SP2 and inserted SP3 correctly. At the end, she said, “that last point you did seemed to
really bring the whole thing together.”
So… who know??

Make that 4.
I’ve learned to triple check the points that go both ways, depending on the treatment: Lung8, Sp3, Liv1, SI5, ST36,
LI1, etc.

I’ve done this too. Who hasn’t?
Sometimes the treatment is “ok.” But I’ve had other times where something was not quite right. Pulse a bit off,
feeling the room not quite settled. Then I’d notice the needle in the wrong direction.
Fix it.
And more than a few times the patients will have a deep sigh and then sink.
It can matter a lot. Or a little. I suspect in part dependent on if the diagnosis is right and how we did with the other
needles.

I have tended to get dyslexic on the hand jing wells – LI1, PC9 as well as BL66 – I’ve had sessions with wrong
direction and good results and then other times I’ve had not good results. Was it the needle direction or choice of
channel?
I do write down in my notes when I screw up a treatment. But it is hard to quantify the impact.
I guess we can experiment on ourselves with it.
…I wonder if Sunim Doam ever needled in the wrong direction…

I find Michael’s experience very interesting – that he sometimes caught it in time, found ‘something not quite right’
happening and one corrected, things improved.

Yeah… sometimes things just don’t feel settled to me. Usually there is a buzz or sudden weakness in the pulse that
was not previously there.
That’s when I think about maybe the treatment is wrong, perhaps I still need to add a point or two, or one of the
needles is not right. Either the point is off or as we’ve been discussing it’s in the wrong way.
The thing about Saam is that we usually get a pretty quick response. So if things seem to not be flowing, then
Iooking to double check my work.
