Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) changes and saliva
production…
Background Clinical studies suggest that acupuncture can stimulate saliva production and
reduce xerostomia (dry mouth). We were interested in exploring the neuronal substrates
involved in such responses. Methods In a randomized, sham acupuncture…
Interesting for us, from the Results section (bolding is mine):
Unilateral manual acupuncture stimulation at LI-2, a point commonly used in clinical practice to treat xerostomia,
was associated with bilateral activation of the insula and adjacent operculum. Sham acupuncture at an adjacent
site induced neither activation nor deactivation. True acupuncture induced more saliva production than sham
acupuncture.

Hi Toby
Yes I ve really learned that there is no need to do bilateral treatments. And bilateral treatments do not give you a
better effect than unilateral as too much of a good thing is not a good thing.
We do not talk about draining the LI- much. LI2 is one of the points we would disperse – the water point on the
metal channel to supplement earth. The study does not state the direction of insertion.

Yes, it s unfortunate to not include this as well as technique, needle gauge, and maybe the most important who is
performing the acupuncture. I made the argument in a paper for my PhD program that a student inserting LI 4 for
the first time and Jeffrey Yuen, clothed in his Daoist robes in his temple inserting LI 4 are totally different things.08/01/2024, 13:47Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) changes and saliva production – Qiological Community
