Facial Shingles Pain

Someone recently asked here about experiences with Sa’Am and Shingles pain – particularly in the face. I have had
three cases in the past year. I think I posted about them a bit before. They all involved severe facial pain. Two of
them responded dramatically in just a few treatments – mainly to combinations of drying [LI supplementation],
moving blood [SI supplementation] and cooling [UB supplementation] – of course there were signs of excessive
damp, blood stasis pain and heat to warrant such treatments.
My third case showed up just like they always do after one or two dramatic successes – just like some inevitable
ego-modifier from the heavens . . . LOL . . . . a much more difficult case . . . . an 80 year old man with wicked
shingles pain around his left ear – during an attack, his ear would get beet red, often with some kind of exudate
around it and pain that had him to his knees. He often came with his wife. A really lovely couple. They just love me
and we have a grand time every visit. He looks to be a good 25-30 years younger than his age. He was a fisherman
for 48 years. I don’t have my notes here but I worked through a number of different strategies – certainly, they all
helped – they kept coming and overall he had improved but he would certainly still get very intense attacks.
Then one day, I stood back and reassessed -feeling there must be something I am missing here . . . I observed his
personality and realised he was very GB deficient – he was just so mild – I just couldn’t imagine him ever getting
angry or wanting to punch anyone out – mild mannered to the extreme. It was a crazy and counterintuitive one –
given his episodes involved blistering red hot surges of pain to the head . . . but I tried it . . . I did GB+ . . . . . he
immediately became very relaxed, started to giggle a lot and eventually fell into a sleep. I ended up doing two
consecutive GB + treatments (followed by a LIV + treatment) and the case really turned for the better after that . . .
. . he just passed four weeks with no attacks. Just goes to show, consider everything all the time.
It also got me thinking about PC XS and how that would show in someone who had no lifetime ‘access’ to real
intellectual development – he was a fisherman for 48 years – so that librarian academic intellect archetype is just
not going to show in someone with such a life experience. But certainly, pronounced GB deficiency was there for
me to see, once I looked.

Isn’t the GB+ supplementation treatment is so amazing when used at the right time in the right place!? And it is
challenging when we see signs we interpret as excess such as the blistering hot surges of pain. Awesome that he
had that experience of giddy happiness.
I am sensing that with Sa’am we use the framework but it has lots of pliability. My patient’s reported experience
with GB+ supplementation is one of calmer, better sleep, less irritable – not characteristics we would think about by10/01/2024, 13:16Facial Shingles Pain – Qiological Community

Some thoughts of mine:
1. Someone doesn’t have to be actually excess on a channel for the pairing channel to work. They can just be
deficient in one of the channels. When we connect into where there is lack it can have profound effects.
2. Someone could be deficient in both, although then we typically choose another channel. But after I do about
6-8 Sa’am treatments I’m working past my 3rd choices many times. I can think of a couple of patients where
I had successful PC+ supplementation and GB+ supplementation treatments within a couple of months
timespan.
3)Regarding PC excess – I think this can show up in so many ways. They can just want to present as being
smart and thoughtful. A facade of an intellect. That doesn’t sound like your salt of the earth fisherman
though. I know Kristin has thought about this a lot though.

If we only get caught up in smarts with the P excess picture, we might miss seeing “the rooted body with slow
deliberate movements” and “relies on reason” which might present differently than what we might think of as
intellectual. A recent patient complaining of neck pain (UB channel) and cognitive impairment (poor short term
memory, hard to retain what he reads) reminds me of Daniel’s mild fisherman. My patient is a middle aged
electrician who teaches a master’s electrician program. His mild, deliberate and rational nature is the grossest thing
in the room. At first I resisted using GB+ because of his cognitive issues. When other treatments didn’t work, he
settled well with GB+ and got some relief for the next pain.

I wonder if this is just a matter of reframing the tricky use of excess in Saam.

I also had an interesting experience doing GB+. I am always hesitant to do it and recently did it on a 14 year old
girl who had been struggling with COVID isolation. She is an only child and responded well to the first treatment I
did, but in talking to her what really stood out was how diplomatic she was and careful with her interactions. I
talked to her about giving her more of a voice (she is living with both parents and grandmother) and she liked the
idea. I warned her that more anger could come up but I thought that would be a good thing in her case, especially
given her age ( I warned the mom as well). She settled on the table and the feedback from mom was “thank you for
bringing our girl back!” supplementing GB somehow opened her up to be lovingly expressive the way she used to
be. It seem that finding your voice can mean expressing ALL of your emotions and thoughts.

I like to frame the virtue of GB as assertiveness.
