Excess Signs / Symptoms ONLY – St Louis Class

I attended the St Louis Sa’Am class via On-Line . . . I am wondering why the slide presentation of the basic
principles ONLY listed the signs and symptoms of Excess in each of the 12 channels and did not list the signs and
symptoms of Deficiency – or is it, being two sides of a coin, simply the case that Deficiency is either (a) just the
hypo-version of the qualities listed for a given Channel or (b) the set of signs and symptoms for the Excess sign
and symptom manifestations listed for the appropriate counterbalanced channel system for any given channel?

Hi Daniel,
That is what I have found the most confusing aspect of this as well. I think that you are correct in terms of how to
look at it. I think that ultimately you end up moving between both sides of the coin without thinking about it too
much, but that takes some time.
Anyone else?

This is how Toby describes the counterbalancing pairs. So K excess=SI deficiency. K excess is treated by
supplementing the deficient SI.
Both of your proposed scenarios can apply depending on the pair.
Toby has his reasons for presenting the information this way after long deliberation. It is helpful for discussion
purposes to keep to the nomenclature he has chosen.
Looking forward to any cases and questions you have to share!

My sense is that it is two sides of a coin.
Liver excess for example IS San Jiao deficiency. Spleen excess IS Lg Intestine deficiency.
We don’t need to describe the “deficiency” of an organ, because it is already described they excess of its
counterbalance.
Plus we can bring in all we already know about organ deficiency or excess from our previous training and
experience. It all fits in here.
