Channel pairs that play nice together

empiricalpoint: September 11, 2019, 9:48pm
Hello,
I am making some “cliff notes” for myself in the clinic. In a seminar and on podcasts Toby has mentioned how
some channel pairs are really nice together. Examples I have noted are Heart and liver to moderate the heat from
just using the heart. Another I noted, was small intestine and large intestine. Are their any other pairs that people
have noted that have a nice synergy? Or for that matter, incompatible?
I know we still have to do our full diagnosis, but just would like to compile nice combos for when the situation
arises.
Thanks

You noted the two most commonly used pairs: H/Liv and SI/LI.
Other combos that Toby saw his teacher use are P/Liv and SI/UB.
Just a reminder, as we are all newbies here, our first inclinations should be to stick to single sided treatments and
avoid the temptation to “cover the bases” with a double sided treatment unless there are clear indications.
SI +can provided the necessary movement to help LI+ move and dry really tenacious damp and phlegm.
Liver+ is used with H+, in those who wouldn’t otherwise have the cool density to contain the warm love of Heart+
Toby has mentioned that at least 50% of his treatments are single sided.

Of course, you can’t treat counterbalancing pairs at the same time.
In the same spirit, you don’t want to ask the body to do 2 contradictory actions. For instance, Toby reports that he
never saw his teacher treat LI and St at the same time. That would be asking the body to both moisten and dry the
exterior.

Thank you very much. I agree. Most of the time I am treating one channel. However I had a case recently where I
was toggling between SI and LI for a few weeks and making good gains. This last treatment I combined both sides
and the treatment was elevated to another level. I think that the weeks of single sided treatment definitely created a
very stable foundation to build on. This last week in combining the 2 eliminated the rest of her symptoms around a
digestive blockage very decisively. It was presenting with a lot of GERDish symptoms and intestinal
absorption/moving issues.
thanks again
Sharon

It does feel strange to tonify KD10 on one side and sedate on the other as what happens in the HT/LR . and PC/LR
pairs. I was going to ask Toby about it in NY but I thought he’d further admonish me for using 8 needles.
Have you asked him about that Kristin – or thoughts on it? Just go with it and don’t think about it?

I asked him about it and he said it wasn’t a problem…

It seemed odd to me too but T says OK.

I realize that our emphasis should be on doing just one treatment on one side, but IF you came across a case that
warranted a two sided-treatment—say, R-sided ear pain that required supplementing both LI and SI—how would
you choose which side to supplement SI, and which to supplement LI?

KristinWisgirda: October 1, 2019, 8:52pm
That example is tricky because both SI and LI go to the ear.
Ideas: If blood stasis and pain were more dominant, use SI+ on the left. If damp/phlegm more dominant, use LI+
on the left.
You could palpate the LI and SI channels a la Wang Ju Yi- whichever had more changes/findings on the right side
could be treated on the left.
Getting side selection less than perfect likely wouldn’t make or break the treatment, if the overall strategy is
correct.
