I’m not making this up

I don’t mean to harp on this issue of tongues. But today was so dramatic I had to share this.
This afternoon I saw a 15 year old girl for a recent right ankle sprain. She’s a monster basketball player.
Her mom was in the room and apparently when I looked at the patient’s tongue, the mom did too. It was dull, a dry
with pasty white coating. Lead me to asking about digest which they both agreed was not optimal.
I did gua sha on the affected leg, as the GB and ST channels were all jammed up from the force up jumping up and
then coming down sideways on her ankle. Then tonified SI on the left.
Went to check the tongue hoping the dullness has shifted, but what I noticed was the coating was no longer pasty,
but wet and floating on the tongue instead of being stuck to it like glue. In fact, the entire tongue was moist now.
As I commented on this the mom pipes up and says, “yes, it’s really different.”
I had not been aware she’d previous looked at it when I did. And even this person not trained in Chinese medicine
could clearly see the change.
I’ve said this before, and this case is another example… while we are taught in school that the tongue changes
slowly, this is not right. It can change in under a minute, and in profoundly obvious ways.
Watch for it!

You gotta start taking pictures!

Good idea. I’ll start to do that and post them here

@michaelmax I’m still learning (mostly from your podcast and the qiologician bonuses) and trying to truly
understand what channel systems to use and when. Can you explain why the SI channel for this girl? Did you use it
because of the yang fire aspect of moving…you really wanted her body to move and warm the injury site to move
stagnation out of the injury? Was your thinking something like that?
I’m so excited for this forum.

Hi @haunani
Yes, I used the SI as it is a great way to move blood and qi, and for trauma where there is blood stasis and pain it
can be quite helpful.
I was NOT looking to warm the area, it’s actually already warm to the touch. I was looking to move qi and blood
with the dynamic power of cold taiyang coupled with the heat of the SI being also a fire organ. (SI is the fire aspect
of the taiyang, while UB is the cold water aspect of the taiyang)

Thank you for your insights @michaelmax
With your insights…is +SI a good option for someone with a long standing cyst (breast)? Or even recurrent
fibroids?
I know it’s important to take into consideration the whole person and their overall presentation but if breast cyst is
someone’s ONLY complaint, with all the other ten questions being within normal range or relatively balanced…or
at least described by the patient as “good” no matter how much deeper I dig, then could we consider the SI an
option?

Toby has said that SI is ideal for moving Blood stasis, so I’d say yes. I also recall that in some views, the scapula
relates to the breast. And certainly SI 9-10 run through areas of lymphatic tissue related to breast, so I’d say it
makes sense. I’d also think of using any other channel that runs through or close to the area where the cyst is. We
can use same or balancing channel on the opposite side of the body for this to move the channel.

Good points @ngmatthews, I’ll keep this mind and suspect it would help with some PMS signs that show up as
tender or fibrous breasts.
