Yesterday a very thin, very dry skinned patient came in with a deep wet sounding cough. She was diagnosed with
pneumonia in her right lower lobe and had been on antibiotics without much improvement.
She repeatedly commented on the grossness of the situation. Every time she coughed, her face expressed disgust.
Her lips were abnormally chapped and she had no appetite. Her whole chest wall was sore from 2 weeks of
coughing and she felt sharp pains every time she breathed. Keeping a heating pad on her chest was soothing. Her
complexion was grey. She reported that the sputum was yellow and hard to cough up so I wanted to be careful
about drying her out.
I wondered if SI+ would be safer, especially given the strong pain element. But the cough sounded so juicy! Even
when she wasn’t coughing, her breathing sounded crackly. So ST+ it was. She immediately breathed deeply and
her color improved. Every time she coughed, I checked in on her and she reported that the cough felt easier and
more sputum was coming up.
At the end of the treatment she asked if it was bad to swallow sputum. Throughout her illness plenty of sputum was
coming up but she was so grossed out by it, she just swallowed it so she wouldn’t have to look at it.
Now I know that the grossed out patient needs to be questioned more carefully, even if they don’t really want to
share the details.

Thanks for sharing that Kristin. I find cough and especially wheezing tough sometimes. – although it is so nice
when it works as the results are loud and clear.
I had a patient a few weeks ago with a very dry cough that seems to be going around. She is thin, vegetarian
although pulse isn’t weak, more thready. I treated LU+ for the cough and she had some phlegm rumblings on the
table.
Two weeks later week she came in and said the last treatment was awful and that she was coughing so much more
after the last treatment. The cough was much worse because she was spitting up all this phlegm in her lungs for like
a week. At first I was like “s$t”, but then thought – wait a minute do you have a cough now? She said no. I then
pondered it and do think that perhaps she’d still have a dry cough had I not done LU+.

Hi Kristin,
Thanks for this case. Can you explain what being grossed out means to you?
Thanks

Hi Sharon,
Because of your teaching, I interpret being grossed out as turbid dampness, in hindsight :). Thanks for pointing it
out.
This patient is down to earth and not typically body phobic, so being grossed out has more clinical weight for her
case and was another pointer to the damp interior diagnosis. When grossed out, her face looked as if she was
nauseated and didn’t want to puke. ST+ to the rescue!
