Hello,
I am curious if there is a particular organ system associated with environmental reactivity in Sa'am. In jingfang, sometimes we might associate someone who is very reactive or sensitive to the environment with ban xia or chai hu. This could be if someone is very sensitive to light, sounds etc. Maybe also or instead this could be someone who has a lot of allergies and perhaps their skin or breathing reacts easily to different things. Is there anything analogous to that in Sa'am?
I can see in Toby's book that in San Jiao excess a patient may have no shielding and thus be vulnerable to outside influences, so I can see how that may be relevant, but I am wondering if there are any other organs to consider.
Thank you.
You're right, I think SJ excess is the most likely presentation of what you're thinking about. A second channel to consider, especially for the reactivity quality, is GB excess.
@toby Thanks so much for your reply. I will explore both of these more.
I have a follow up question that pertains to this as just all the cases I am working on. What if there is a particular organ system I want to supplement, like San Jiao in order to release trauma or Liver to moderate environmental reactivity, and the indication to use that makes a lot of sense, but there is significant evidence of an excess in that system? Maybe the patient has a complexion or personality traits that are associated with a particular excess?
In this tradition, the San Jiao does not necessarily release trauma. If there are mixed symptoms and signs for a channel imbalance then try and address other more clearly defined channel pair imbalances first.
SJ+ to release trauma is an idea that comes from Kim Hong Kyung. I have found that this can work spectacularly well for some people (especially when combined with KD+, which is a concept from Evan Mahoney), but I would integrate that concept with the more constitutional approach of Doam Sunim and Toby Daly.
I concur with Toby, my first thought with environmental reactivity is San Jiao Excess (LV+ treatment). I treat a lot of highly sensitive patients and nearly all of them are San Jiao excess (bright eyes, sensitivity to light and sensory stimuli in general, blood deficiency from a TCM perspective). PC+ is also often quite helpful for these people (often, although not always, people who respond well to LV+ for these issues will also respond well to PC+).
I would also investigate the HT/BL axis - this could be a case where the person's heart is too open and unguarded, and the Cold Water of Taiyang qi (BL+) could provide a measure of wariness and greater self protection. Or, it could be the reverse - they are reactive to the environment because they are too fearful, and the warmth of Imperial Fire (HT+) will help to melt through this fear. Considering temperature, pulse qualities, complexion, and palpating the abdomen can help to differentiate if these are in play.
